We are delighted to say – the Chameleon is the first of our vessel designs heading for commercialisation. Meet the OOS Multi-Activity Unit (MAU) Luctor et Emergo.
It has been a hilly road – well, we are based in Scotland. But even that doesn’t prepare you for the ups and downs of bringing a vessel design to fruition – that is, taking it from lines on paper to a real life floating structure.
Even the vessel name, translated as “I struggle and emerge” couldn’t be more apt for the road we’ve traveled.
From drawing board to a port near you
The OOS MAU Luctor et Emergo will be based on the jack-up Chameleon design. The Chameleon was always designed as a multi-purpose vessel but one which was available as a ‘blank canvas’. OOS have taken that canvas and by combining our efforts and engineering are adding even more functionality.
Just for starters our original design has been modified to include 2 x 1200 mT cranes. The cranes plus adaptations to the hull mean the vessel can lift and remove the topsides from pretty much every platform in the Southern North Sea. The jackets too.
The cantilever parking provides a clear deck area of 2500 m2 when not using the Drilling/P&A package – meaning the deck space is available for storing those same topsides and jackets. You only have to return to port when the deck is full. The topsides and jackets can be stored and offloaded at the quayside without the need for additional support vessels or heavy lifting equipment. How’s that for a cost-effective operational efficiency?
SIMOPS (simultaneous operations) was a specific requirement of OOS specifically and we reckon we’ve delivered. While P&A is underway, work can be done in parallel for the lifting by the cranes and setting up machinery for topsides removal. As long as there are no hydrocarbons present (don’t want no sparks) lots of other work can take place (wait for it)…simultaneously.
A jack-up designed for O&G and Renewables
And that’s not all. The cranes allow the vessel to cross from offshore O&G to Renewables where it can install monopiles, jackets and turbines.
Here’s to the Chameleon design, the first of (hopefully) many to come
Thank you to everyone for your support. Friends and families for putting up with grumpy and frazzled spouses. (Though we are pretty sure the long hours and up-in-the-middle-of the-night-to-drive-to-Aberdeen moments aren’t over yet). Ashik and his team at Great Water for breathing life into Iain’s concepts. And not to forget our long-suffering business advisors and supporters at Scottish Enterprise and SDI.
Congrats to OOS on the announcement and reveal of Luctor et Emergo. We look forward to meeting her in real life in Q4 2020.
